Oh Takeshi, where did it all go wrong?

UPDATE: Had to add this lot…

3:27 – that’s a real neck snapper

If seeing people humiliate themselves physically and Richard Hammond being snide and unfunny is your thing, then Total Wipeout is for you.  The Hamster acts like skunk piss repellent for me, but luckily having a 13 month old opened my eyes to the edited version shown on Cbeebies, which seems to have most of his inane monologues removed.

Endemol are, not surprisingly, behind Wipeout, but what is surprising is that the same course in Argentina is used for the show in Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Mexico, Middle East, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, Ukraine and the UK (Wipeout USA has its own hard-core course in California).  It’s obviously cheaper to fly contestants to Argentina than to build new sets… and I suspect the insurance is lower too.

Little twerp aside, my main problem with Wipeout  is it’s no way near as funny as Takeshi’s Castle (devised by Beat Takeshi of all people), as interesting as Unbeatable Banzuke or as tough as Ninja Warrior.

Why didn’t someone commission a new Takeshi’s Castle in the UK?  I’d pay good money to see people shred their shins on Skipping Stones, dislocate shoulders on Knock Knock, bend in half the wrong way on High Rollers and generally suffer slapstick abuse, all with a weird Japanese spin.  Perhaps Wipeout is the result, in which case the old addage that a sequel is never as good as the original still stands.
