One good reason to be cheerful…

We are living in depressing times. Calamities left and right, global and local. Many so personal that they are buried.

But occasionally there are reasons to be cheerful. To carry a little hope.
I met one of them last night.
His name is Graham Carpenter and he is leading an heroic team of workers who are helping against all odds to give abused kids a second chance to find themselves and grasp what most of us take for granted. A normal life. Graham and his team run a farm based charity called Dandelion Time. It’s a place where kids, and their often traumatised parents, can go and take part in a hands on, supported experience. Using their hands to make something that will last a lifetime in their imagination…and getting a pat on the back. Often for the first time. Ever.
Dandelion Time is doing a marvellous job, but largely under the radar. Until now.
Graham and his team have quietly been spotted by Lenny Henry and the BBC Comic Relief team and given a chance to tell their story. Blue Peter adopted them last week on TV as their chosen charity for Comic Relief 2011. BBC South East News are featuring them as a news item on the 8th March. Then Dandelion Time get a national audience on the One Show on Tuesday 15th March.
This is all fantastic publicity but in it self means nothing. But what it might just mean is that others will start to realise what an important body of work Graham and his team are embracing and that this deserves the widest possible support.
I’m in. Who’s with me?
